For those of us that aren’t named Vera Wang, the idea of sewing our own wedding gown seems as impossible as oh, I don’t know, walking a tight rope. But this crafty-and very brave, I might add-bride did just that. (Sewed her own wedding gown; not the impossible tight rope thing.)

Amy and Dustin kicked off their summer wedding in Colorado by tying the knot at an event filled with charm and tons of diy details. The bride crafted a one of a kind strapless, full-skirted gown featuring all sorts of heirloom and thrift-store doilies. Here’s how she did it:

I took a sketch of what I wanted into a little shop in Niwot, Colorado called ‘Sew Fresh Studios’ and asked the owner if she could make my dress. She told me that it would not save me any money to have her make it, because she has to charge by the hour. It would still cost her about $600-$700 as a result. But once she looked over the picture I had drawn, she asked me if I knew how to sew.

“Just your basic skirt,” I told her.

She had confidence in me (never having seen my sewing skills,) and encouraged me to take one of her garment making classes and make the gown of my dreams myself.

When I calculated out the cost of material and class, I was looking at spending about $270 to make the vintage chic wedding dress of my dreams. And so the fun began!

I learned so much, met some amazingly talented women, and learned how to sew a wedding dress. Whenever I told people that I was making my own dress they were shocked and nervous for me…sometimes I am glad that I lack those emotions.

There is no end to the amount of diy details in this wedding. Just listen.

The bride’s friend made the beautiful organic bounties out of feathers, hemp, and scraps from her creative closet. The couple’s guestbook was inspired by a the thumbprint tree sketch that her sister sketched. Amy’s veil was borrowed from her friend who made it for her own wedding a year ago. The floral arrangements were purchased whole sale and put together by Amy and her friends. And the dress, as we know, was HAND SEWN by the bride herself. Still can’t get over this….!
